Koh Samui Events

Koh Samui is a well-known beach destination where travellers from all over the world come to swim, surf and snorkel in the crystal clear waters around the island.

But Koh Samui is so much more than just a beach paradise. Travellers should be aware of some of the many cultural events and public holidays that are celebrated throughout the year.

2017 Koh Samui Upcoming Event Calendar

Koh Samui is probably best known for the Full Moon parties held on Koh Phangan each month. Thousands of party-goers travel to Koh Phangan, which is just off the coast of Koh Samui, to party the night away the night before, during and after the full moon. The party starts after dusk and lasts until dawn. Many bars on Sunrise beach stay open, with food and drink being served and loud music being played until the early hours of the morning.

Koh Samui also takes part in Songkran (water festival) where locals celebrate the new year by throwing water on each other, which symbolises getting rid of any bad luck as the new year begins. Visitors to Koh Samui during this festival should not expect to be left out of these festivities as the as the locals will take no mercy on those who don’t want to get wet. So visitors are advised to leave their valuables in their rooms or carry their belongings in a waterproof bag.

There are also many cultural events held on Koh Samui including celebrations of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queens birthdays (5th of December and 12th of August respectively – both public holidays), Loy Krathong (festival of lights), Makha Bucha (Buddhist celebration) and Chakri Memorial Day (which celebrates the founding of the Chakri dynasty).

In addition to the cultural events, Koh Samui also plays host to golfing tournaments, fun runs, sailing regattas and triathlons, just to name a few. There is truly a myriad of events hosted on Koh Samui all throughout the year so make sure you check out some of the great events held on Koh Samui during your stay.
